Crates, Packing and Delivery for Piano Shipping
A piano sent by road, rail or sea is handled by people and machinery that are not piano specialists. A strong box or crate protects it from forklifts, other freight and the bumps of a long journey, which is why we make boxes to suit the instrument rather than relying on general furniture packaging.
Uprights, pianolas and grands each pack differently. An upright usually travels standing on its base, while a grand has its legs, lyre and lid removed and is secured on its side. Accurate measurements let us prepare the right box before collection day, so packing at your home is quick and tidy.
Once the piano is packed, we deliver the crate to the depot or warehouse of the shipping company you have chosen. Booking the freight, along with any export, import or customs paperwork, stays with you and your shipper, so check their requirements for crate size and labelling early.
Piano shipping also needs planning around dates. Shippers often have set cut-off times, so tell us when the piano needs to be at the depot and we will fit collection and packing around it. If you are moving house at the same time, the piano can be collected before or after the rest of your furniture.
The same care applies at the start of the journey as on any local move. Stairs, narrow halls and steep driveways are handled with padded covers, protective straps and heavy-duty dollies before the crate goes on. A piano that leaves your home without a scratch has the best possible start to its journey.
At the other end, the receiving shipper or local removalist will unpack it. Once it arrives and has had time to adjust to its new climate, book a qualified piano tuner to bring it back to pitch.

- Cover: discuss transit insurance for the whole journey, door to door, with your shipping company
