Moving grand pianos is a different job from moving an upright. A grand cannot travel on its legs, so it is partly taken apart, turned onto its side and strapped to a padded board before it leaves the room. Here is what happens on the day and why each step matters.

What Happens When Moving Grand Pianos

First the lid comes off and is wrapped in padded covers. The lyre, which holds the pedals, is removed next so the pedal rods are not bent or snapped. The piano is then carefully tipped onto its straight side onto a piano board, and the legs are taken off one at a time.
With the body strapped firmly to the board, it rolls on heavy-duty dollies through doorways, along hallways and down paths. Every part that came off is wrapped and kept together, so nothing goes missing between the two addresses. The keyboard end stays well padded throughout, as it is one of the most delicate parts of the instrument.
At the new address the process runs in reverse. The legs are refitted, the piano is lifted back onto them, the lyre and lid go back on, and the instrument is positioned exactly where you want it.
Before the covers come off, we check that it stands level and steady, and we recommend a tuner once it has settled. Moving grand pianos this way keeps strain off the legs and the delicate lyre.
A grand piano is sized by its length, measured from the front of the keyboard to the curved tail. Baby grands are the shortest, medium and parlour grands sit in between, and a full-size concert grand is the longest and heaviest. Length decides how much floor space we need and the size of the team for moving grand pianos.
Getting Ready for a Grand Piano Move
- Measure: the length and width of the case, plus the narrowest doorway on the route
- Clear space: move rugs, side tables, stools and ornaments well away from the piano
- Plan the room: decide on the exact position and which way the keyboard will face before we arrive
- Apartments: book the lift or loading area if either address is in a strata building
- Parking: keep the driveway or a space close to the entrance free on the day
When you are ready to get a fixed-cost quote, send the length, the number of steps and a few photos. Owners thinking of doing it themselves can read how to move a baby grand piano, but for homes, schools and venues, moving grand pianos safely is really a job for trained piano removalists.
